Located high above the Nantahala River Gorge lies a unique cold-water fishing location known as Nantahala Lake. This pristine lake sits at a 3,000-foot elevation and has 30 miles of shoreline. Here you can fish for walleye, crappie, sunfish, trout, bass, and many kinds of sunfish. Nantahala Lake also holds the distinction of being the only lake in the South where you can find freshwater Kokanee salmon. There are two public boat launch areas for anyone who wants to get out on the water. The first one is located off Wayah Road on the east shore, and the second can be found on the west shore.
