This lake is part of and lends its name to the Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area (formerly Kepler-Bradley), a major fishing area in southern Alaska. Matanuska is stocked by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game with Arctic char, cherry salmon, chinook salmon, and rainbow trout, and other lakes in the recreation area contain grayling and trout. Matanuska Lakes State Park is just north of the Glenn Highway, within easy drive of Anchorage.
