Deer Creek Fishing

Deer Creek is the perfect place to go for truly great trout fishing. Stocked annually with rainbow trout that range from nine to twenty inches long, this creek is a great fishing spot. Here you can also find brown trout, which are raised in private hatcheries and stocked in the creek on occasion. You may even find smallmouth bass – though the population is low. If you want to try to catch hickory shad, plan your trip from late March through early May. You’ll have the best luck if you head to the lower part of the creek where the shad like to hang out. Springtime is also a great time to catch one of the many river herring that run up the creek. Just note that the spring months are a very popular time for fishing at Deer Creek, so it can get a bit crowded in the lower portion. During this time, you may want to try fly fishing from the Strafford Road Bridge, which may land you some shad.
