How to identify Escolar

Escolars continue to grow darker as they grow older, going from dark brown to jet black. They look similar to some Tunas and are quite agile when it comes to swimming. A distinct lateral keel is present, as are finlets (4-6), behind the second dorsal fin and anal fin. They reach up to 7 feet long.

They are deep water fish living at depths between 600-3,500 feet where the coast gives way to the deep sea. Escolars don’t venture towards the surface unless it’s nighttime. During the day, they feed near the bottom.
