The top side of the Atlantic Torpedo Ray is a brownish-black-gray, and the abdomen is white. The thick, disc-like pectoral fins are almost the same length as they are wide. In comparison to other ray species, the Atlantic Torpedo Ray has body shape that is much more circular. The Atlantic Torpedo Ray has large spiracles behind its small eyes. Its arched/wide mouth sits between a pair of nostrils and has a flap of skin that separates the mouth from the nostril. On each side of its mouth the Atlantic Torpedo Ray has furrowed corners, and its teeth are pointy, arranged in rows (adults have 66, young have 38.) The Atlantic Torpedo ray has small gill slits are all the same length except the first and fifth gill slits which are shorter than the rest. The Atlantic Torpedo Ray weighs as much as 200 pounds and can reach a length of 6 feet.
