Adams Fly Pattern

The Adams is one of the most popular and best selling dry fly patterns of all time. Some anglers even refer to it as the perfect dry fly. It’s a versatile fly that imitates an adult mayfly, caddisfly or midge. It is designed for targeting riverine rainbow, brown and brook trout.

The Adams is a general fly pattern that comes in several variations including the popular Parachute Adams which derives its name from the parachute style hackle attached at the head. The Parachute Adams provides greater buoyancy and visibility.

At first glance the Adams appears a bit underwhelming, but don’t be fooled, it’s a trout magnet. It’s a classic attractor that effectively imitates a variety of aquatic insect hatches and will pull in the trout year round.

While an Adams can be fished effectively during a variety of hatches, it’s still important to match the size of your Adams to the hatch. Tied in a size 18-20 the Adams can be fished when trout are feeding on Blue-winged Olivers (BW0s). An oversized size 10 or size 12 Adams is ideal for fishing larger hatches.
