The Blacksmith Fork River is a great place to wet your line if you want to hook some Brown trout. The river isn’t that big, but the trout are decent. You’ll find strong populations of Brown trout along its entire length. Along its upper reaches you’ll start to encounter some Cutthroats. Expect to hook some Rainbows and the occasional Mountain Whitefish as well.
Blacksmith Fork River fish species:
The Utah Department of Wildlife Resources encourages anglers to harvest any Brown trout they catch to allow the remaining fish to grow larger. Most of the trout on Blacksmith will take spinners, jigs, crank baits and a variety of flies. Caddis, midge, mayfly and sow bug patterns all work well for fly fishing. Egg patterns used as attractors and streamers are also effective.
Blacksmith Fork is one of the only rivers in Utah to experience strong Salmon Fly hatches. If you’re in to fly fishing, and want to watch trout slamming the surface for your flies, hit the river on one of the Salmon Fly hatches. You won’t be disappointed.
The River can experience a bit of fishing pressure from local anglers during certain times of the year. If it’s sunny out, and the weather’s nice, don’t expect to be the only angler on the water. Hit the river when it’s a bit cooler and overcast out and you have a better chance of finding a stretch that’s all yours and reeling in some beauties.
There is public and provide access along the river until it meets Curtis Creek, forks, and veers south. Pay attention to where you’re at. A lot of the land along the river is private and you’ll need permission to fish. Public access is somewhat limited. Most of the private property is heavily posted with signs, so just pay attention.
Daily catch limit at the time of this report is 1 fish over 15 inches and 4 Browns and total limit of no more than 8 trout.
The easiest way to get to Blacksmith Fork River is to find your way to the city of Hyrum Utah and then head due east on Main St. As you leave town, Main Street turns into Highway 101 and the river runs a parallel to the road.
