Located just two miles from Mount Rushmore, Horsethief Lake is a great location to catch high-quality trout. Known as one of the best trout fishing spots in South Dakota, this lake is full of quality brown and rainbow trout. You can catch many other species of here as well, including perch, walleye, and crappie. During the months of September, October and November, head to Horsethief Lake for great fly fishing. And in the winter, the ice fishing is excellent. Recently, there was a large project to improve the depth and water quality of the lake, making for even better fishing. You can easily access the shore for fishing, or for launching a boat. Horsethief Lake also has an ADA-accessible fishing pier for those who want to fish in deeper waters without getting in a boat.
