Flapper Rig

Anglers who enjoy surf fishing will find the flapper rig to be an effective option. This rig gets its name from the hook snoods that flap around when the rig is cast. The flapper rig is one of the best rigs to use when fishing short or mid-range distances in the sea. It’s also a good rig to use when you want to cast several hooks at the same time to catch more fish.

For this rig, connect your main line to a strong leader line using a barrel swivel. Then connect the other end of the leader line to a weight using a swivel clip. When choosing the type of leader line, look for a strong monofilament or fluorocarbon line that is anywhere from 60-80lbs. This will allow the rig to handle a decent-size fish.

The type of fish species you’re targeting and where you’re fishing will determine the number of snoods to add to the flapper rig. Two to three snoods work well when fishing for smaller fish in open waters. One or two hooked snoods are ideal when going after larger fish, or when fishing in areas with structures. The main thing to remember is to place the snoods 12 and 16 inches apart so they don’t get in the way of one another when you cast out your line.
